I've stopped eating my favorite prawns and shrimp.  I do this because in my research I've learned that most prawns are either farmed in Thailand or come from the Gulf area.  The farmed shrimp are tainted with antibiotics so I do not want to eat them or the antibiotics.  The ones coming from the Gulf are obviously a hazard due to the BP oil spill.  Since not eating prawns, my awareness has increased and I've been recently alarmed by the number of situations where prawns are being featured as if there were no associated issues, no problems, no loss, no grief.  I see magazines featuring recipes that call for prawns, a local restaurant features an entree labeled "the New Orleans" that features prawns.
I feel that this is disrespectful to the people of the Gulf region who are suffering from the BP oil disaster, the shrimpers who have lost their family business of several generations and who are likely to not see the business resume.  And pretending to continue on without changing our behaviors feels as though we are sticking our heads in the sand to avoid seeing the harsh reality of this disaster.  By changing my eating habits and talking about my observations, awareness, and concerns at every chance I get, I am making this disaster more of a part of my mundane reality.
